[ANIME] The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya review

"Haruhiism" implies that the anime has transcended beyond entertainment into something more closely resembling religion. Despite having not read the novels or the manga, majority of the fans (converts via the anime) remain zealous followers of Suzumiya Haruhi, ningen extraordinaire. Who she is, what she is capable of, remains the mystery at the core of this intriguing and often hilarious series.

SPOILERS BELOW:

Snipped from wikipedia: "The Haruhi Suzumiya story focuses around one girl named Haruhi Suzumiya who has an obsession with the supernatural. To find the supernatural, she forms a Brigade of five members in order to find the supernatural and play with them. Without realizing it, she recruited an alien, time traveler, and esper into her ranks. It is later found out that Haruhi herself is not a normal human, as she has the ability to alter, destroy, or create the world as she wishes. The story is narrated by her classmate, Kyon, who had just recently given up his beliefs of the supernatural."

I watched the anime without having any idea of how popular it really was. In truth, the first episode (Episode 00) lured me in immediately, being refreshingly witty and funny. Kyon's comments as the cameraman nailed it for me. You could really feel the poor guy's exasperation at how idiotic they all looked during filming. But later on, my interest waned, partly turned off by the non-chronological sequencing of the episodes. I asked my sister if she had already watched my copy and she said she stopped watching after just a handful of episodes. So the beginning bored the two of us. I decided to search it up to see if it's any good, and lo and behold, "Haruhi" it seems has become a cult classic in just a few episodes. I scratched my head at this, then decided to give the series another chance.

I picked up where I left off, at episode 5, and true to the testimonies, the series became more and more involving as the pieces and hints fall into place, ending with the very VERY intriguing scene at the last aired episode. "Ponytails turn me on" for crying out loud! It was the best confession scene ever. *^_^*

The anime had many genuinely funny moments. I especially enjoyed Episode 00 and the baseball ep. It's also fascinating to watch how Haruhi's "sentinels" regard and treat her differently, according to their own secret society's set of Haruhi beliefs. Who she really is was never fully disclosed in the anime, but we did sure get a pretty good idea of what she is capable of. LOL at the Evangelion references! ^_^

I had been keenly interested in Kyon and why he stuck it out with Haruhi like that. You could have sworn his blood pressure goes up every single moment he is with her. I was like, finally, an anime where the two lead characters are not romantically interested in each other. But they did not seem to be the best of friends either. Their relationship remained a mystery to me until the very last episode. Sleeping Beauty reference or not, it was a shocking, "Aaaaah eureka!" moment for me, when Kyon finally faced Haruhi and "woke" her to the value of the real world. That scene is FTW.

Production values are beyond reproach. The animation is dazzling, as Kyoto Animation didn't seem to scrimp on the frame rates and everything else. But the real gem of this series is Aya Hirano. Her impressive acting skill earned her the "Voice Acting Award" in the Sixth Annual Tokyo Anime Awards and a nomination for the "Best Actress in a leading role" category from the first Seiyū Awards (trivia from Wiki). Listening to her ramble on and on is a reward in itself. Her voice alone gave Haruhi most of that irresistible, implacable charm.

I think I finally sort of get what Haruhiism is all about. It's a bit like watching the series Lost, where part of the fun is figuring out what is really going on in the story. And obsessing over the details, inferences and hints can get, well, a bit too addicting. ^_^

I can't believe I had let the DVD sit idle on my computer desk for such a long time without watching and finishing it. Great series, highly recommended. Now I'm craving for the manga. And I'm not even done with Nana yet, lol!

Kyon, who the heck are you?! I'm pretty sure you are not the ordinary ningen you profess to be. Darn sure 100%.

:)

[ANIME] Haruhi Ending: Gundam Toys Parody

Hahahaha! When I watched the first episode of Haruhi, I was like, wtf?! Very funny series! Here's the very famous Gundam toys parody of the ending sequence, from http://dat.2chan.net/b/ and uploaded by datyfutaba.

Enjoy! ^_^

Trivia for those who don't know: the voice actress of Haruhi is the same seiyuu of Reira from Nana: Aya Hirano. She's using her mostly semi-mature voice in Nana. She is such a good voice actor!

[PERSONAL] Quarter-Life Crisis

They call it the "Quarter-life Crisis." It is when you
stop going along with the crowd and start realizing
that there are many things about yourself that you
didn't know and may not like.

You start feeling insecure and wonder where you will
be in a year or two, but then get scared because you
barely know where you are now.

You start realizing that people are selfish and that,
maybe, those friends that you thought you were so
close to aren't exactly the greatest people you have
ever met, and the people you have lost touch with are
some of the most important ones. What you don't
recognize is that they are realizing that too, and
aren't really cold, catty, mean or insincere, but that
they are as confused as you.

You look at your job... and it is not even close to
what you thought you would be doing, or maybe you are
looking for a job and realizing that you are going to
have to start at the bottom and that scares you.

Your opinions have gotten stronger. You see what
others are doing and find yourself judging more than
usual because suddenly you realize that you have
certain boundaries in your life and are constantly
adding things to your list of what is acceptable and
what isn't. One minute, you are insecure and then the
next, secure.

You laugh and cry with the greatest force of your
life. You feel alone and scared and confused.
Suddenly, change is the enemy and you try and cling on
to the past with dear life, but soon realize that the
past is
drifting further and further away, and there is
nothing to do but stay where you are or move forward.

You get your heart broken and wonder how someone you
loved could do such damage to you. Or you lie in bed
and wonder why you can't meet anyone decent enough
that you want to get to know better. Or maybe you love
someone but love someone else too and cannot figure
out why you are doing this because you know that you
aren't a bad person. One night stands and random hook
ups start to look cheap.

Getting wasted and acting like an idiot starts to look
pathetic. You go through the same emotions and
questions over and over, and talk with your friends
about the same topics because you cannot seem to
make a decision.

You worry about loans, money, the future and making a
life for yourself... and while winning the race would
be great, right now you'd just like to be a contender!
What you may not realize is that everyone reading this
relates to it.

We are in our best of times and our worst of times,
trying as hard as we can to figure this whole thing
out.

-- from a forum a belong to (forwarded mail). *sigh* I can so relate. Amen to every single word.

Hope this reaches other people who like me feel the same.

[MUSIC] Mitz's Winter Collection CD (Anime/JPop)

Since I'm feeling a little sentimental lately, I've decided to compile my own collection of music on CD. All of them are beautiful music, but the one thing that ties them all together is their ability to put me in "senti" mode. All of the songs are hauntingly lonely in one way or another. *sniff*

I just want to share the tracklist with you (share the love!). The songs are arranged in this way because the music flows better in this order. I spent some time arranging & rearranging, and this seems to be the best. :) Hope you have all the songs, because it is such an experience listening to this collection. Lovely lovely lovely. (^3^)

MITZ'S WINTER COLLECTION (ANIME/JPOP):

[ANIME] Nana Ending: A Review + Kuroi Namida video

"The flow of time cleanses the past and heals the wounds in peoples hearts. But there are wounds that you can't speak of." - Nana Hachi, Episode 47

After watching Nana season 1 for two straight days (it's only 47 eps anyway), I'm dehydrated from all the crying I did. There's always something to cry about in each episode. It's safe to say that this is the coolest "slice of life" I've ever watched. It's not overly dramatic, nothing too cheesy, but jeez it pulls at your heartstrings everytime.

Spoilers follow, ne?

Argh! I don't get Nana Hachi! Why can't she just dump Takumi and make up with Nobu? And Nobu, that coward...

But in hindsight I think everyone did what's best for everybody. Nobu didn't take advantage of Nana's weakness that night so she could be happy with Takumi. Nana on the other hand finally quit being indecisive and stuck it out with Takumi. Though it's certainly not the most idealistic set-up, it's the best they can do given the circumstances.

I only wish I can think of a way to end it better, sans the tears and the heartaches, but there's a reason for everything and I guess it's really for the best, all that has happened.

*craves for the manga*

I'm happy for Takumi, taking the responsibility for the baby even if he isn't sure if it's his. He may be sexy and all but with that attitude he got me turned off pretty quickly. But nearing the end, meeting Hachi's family an all, I can't help but think there may be a future with him after all. I do get what Nana O said, there will be infidelities here and there. But Hachi made her choice, and she chose being with that man despite who he is. *shrugs* Hope he changes for her sake though, but that seems more unlikely than not. If things didn't work out between them, she will always have the love of her daughter, and that's much more precious.

I'm most happy for Ren and Nana O... hayaku and get married already! Those two need each other, and I'm glad Ren finally proposed to her. I know they'd be happy together. Even though Nana O acts all I-don't-care and all, deep inside she knows she can't live without Red, and more so vice-versa.

Reira and Shin... I'm also rooting for those two. Gah Trapnest and Blast's relationshapes are all so complicated and interwined with each other. I wish Shin can make Reira happy, and likewise, because these two people are two of the saddest characters in Nana. Reira is stuck in unrequited love, and Shin lacked love early on in his life. They could comfort each other as friends and lovers.

Nana Hachi and Shouji... By the way, that's the best break-up/make-up scene I've ever seen. Though they seem to be at peace with each other now, they parted ways crying. They still cared for each other, but I'm mostly sad over the friendship gone to waste. It was a bad break-up and I don't think two normal people can go about seeing each other as friends still after that. Shouji and Hachi could have been happy. But they were both human (bear with me) and they each have their own faults that got in the way of happiness. At least, both seem happy in the end. Sachiko is now friends with Junko and Kyosuke. I still feel some grievance towards her but Shouji really seem happy being with her.

*sigh* I wish I can have Junko's maturity and common sense. Then I wouldn't have as much foul-ups as I have in this life. I envy her.

Poor Nobu... I cried when he cried, the pain is too much to bear. I really don't know what I'd do in his place. I probably couldn't resist opening that door and embracing the person I love most in the world, but then again maybe I can love that person beyond my need.. and not open that door so that person can stay happy.

After all these years (six, ne?) he still loves her. He still does. Reaching for her hand by the bathtub like that... and she's got Takumi's ring on... T_T

Regardless, this series has got me thinking about a lot of things. About myself, about relationships, about people in general. And why we can't help hurting each other, and loving each other. Again and again and again.

I'm a fan. Ai Yazawa is a goddess. She's the best therapist an otaku will ever have. Err, scratch that. I guess "mirror" is the best word to describe her work. This slice of life has never been so life-like.

PS: I'm glad they chose Kuroi Namida as the final ep's ending theme. It was perfect. Hanabi and this song... just perfect. I was bawling.

PPS: The scene where Nobu is crying by Nana's bedside upon learning she is pregnant with Takumi's child, to me, is the most painful to watch in all 47 episodes. My skin was crawling. This shouldn't happen to anyone, but it does. One thing I got from this anime is that we can't be too sure of our own happiness. Depressed people should be banned from watching Nana. ^^;

[VIDEO+LYRICS] A Little Pain by Olivia inspi' Reira (Trapnest)

Olivia - A Little Pain Lyrics (full version)

Travel to the moon kimi wa nemuri yume wo toku

No need to cry

(feel something feel nothing

Listen closely listen closely)
Wide open ears
Disarm the dream tickler
In the constant moment
(you will find me where it's quiet
Listen closely listen closely)
Let the blood flow
Through all the spaces
Of the universe

Kizuite
I'm here waiting for you
Ima to wa chigau mirai ga atte mo
I'm here waiting for you
Sakebi tsuzukete
Kitto kokoro wa tsunagu ito wo tagutteru
Ano koro no watashi me wo samasu you ni
No need to cry

Sugoi sugoi! I really wish there was a Trapnest band. I'd be a Reira fan for sure, but of course Nana O owns my heart already.

I heart this song, so painful to listen to late at night. *sniff* It tugs at the heartstrings. "No need to cry... I'm here waiting for you..." Just shows how lonely Reira really is, how we all are, actually.

[MANGA/ANIME] Nana by Ai Yazawa fan update!

I'm currently nearing the end of volume one of the manga, and I just finished episode 11 of the anime, ending with Yasu's appearance in Tokyo. I must say, Nana will definitely keep me up tonight. All of them are good so far - the live action movie, the manga, the anime. With the way things are going, Nana has a fair shot of surpassing Blood+ as my most favorite series right now.

It helps that the anime has one of the most hauntingly beautiful ending themes to underscore the emotions one feels at the end of each episode - "A Little Pain" by Olivia. Guaranteed an instant favorite at first listen. Nana had many times brought me to the brink of tears, and I'm only on the 11th episode of the anime! I am so in love with Nana O's story!

Btw, I can't wait to meet anime Takumi. I wonder how his voice will sound like. ^_^

Way to go Ai Yazawa!

**UPDATE** 9/13/07 12:05 PM

I just watched episode 26 of the anime. Man this ep struck a painful chord with me. Nana is turning out to be a story on loneliness and how in the end, people are just using each other to fill a void deep within their hearts. I see this all the time. I feel sad for Nana Hachi, because ultimately she is the one who most resembles us in real life.

Ultimately, we're just lonely people looking for someone who'll mask the pain.

**UPDATE** 9/13/07 12:31 PM

Episode 27. Go Nobu! YES! YES! YES!!!

[MANGA] Zettai Kareshi (Absolute Boyfriend) by Yuu Watase

For the record, I can't remember the last time I cried over a manga. Probably it's because the last one I read (before Backstage Prince) was Death Note. ^^; I've always enjoyed Yuu Watase's artwork, especially her bishies. Even if most of them looked like Tamahome. ^^;;

Zettai Kareshi is no exception. Every panel is beautifully drawn. The characters are so very cute and oh so attractive. Her chibis are especially endearing, so kawaii and funny! The story lacked sophistication though, and it might be as well. Zettai is not a story to be taken seriously. Being light shoujo, it's more like whipped cream with cherries on top, and I've enjoyed the confection immensely.

Riiku has always been unlucky in love. Every guy she has confessed to has turned her down. So one day when a really weird salesman named Gaku invited her to check out the website of their merchandise, she discovers the Nightly Lover series of figures, mechanical "boyfriends" so lifelike, programmed to pleasure a woman and grant her every desire. On a whim, she orders one for a three-day trial period. When the figure, which she named Night (creative, isn't she?) arrived at her doorstep, it started off a series of mis(adventures) both in love and in friendship. Especially since Soushi, Rikku's best bud since they were kids, realizes he might be feeling more than just friendship for the girl he grew up with.

Fangirl note: Night is really yummy. Even his SDs are yummy. But I like mini-Night more than anything else. I'll try to be a good girl for Christmas and hope to get a "forest-gnome". LOL!

As for the ending, although one can see it happening from a mile away, it's still satisfactory. Just the way I'd end it too. I'm just so sorry for Soushi. He didn't deserve all that. It's always the good guys who have the worst of luck. *sigh* But I promise that is not a spoiler. ^_~

I hope Ms Yuu Watase comes back to the Philippines. I was there when she attended that anicon, she is so pretty. Btw, I heard people are divided when it comes to her work: those who like them and those who really hate them. There's nothing to hate as long as you don't take it seriously. Stick to reading Blood of the Immortal if you're looking for more, but Zettai Kareshi is one fun shoujo read with heaps of that "kilig" factor.

For older teens.
Image taken from Yuu Watase fans.

PS: I adore Blood of the Immortal!

[MOVIE] Nana movie adaptation (starring Mika Nakashima & Aoi Miyazaki)

Wow. I have never read the manga or seen the anime series yet so I thought I'd sample NANA by watching the live adaptation first. Reaction: Wow. Not bad at all. I was raring to go to the first chapter of the manga now. ^_^

I first heard of Mika Nakashima as the artist behind Cry No More, one of the ending themes of Blood+. She plays Nana Osaki, and she means business. She can rock! She played the perfect foil against Aoi Miyazaki's character Nana Komatsu (Hachi). She is so cute, and I can never agree more when Takumi (Tetsuji Tamayama) said this to her later on in the manga. Both actresses gave good performances, one balancing the other, but the real bonus for me as one who have only seen parts of the manga is just seeing those characters come to life in flesh and blood.

I'm sure I missed most of the dynamics and undertones of the relationships among the characters, not having read the manga first. Dakara... Nana chapter 1, here I come!

Glamorous Sky is an awesome soundtrack, by the way. Very, very addicting. ^^; Mika really showed the fans what she can do with that voice. I wish I can listen to more songs like this. I love the melody, the powerful vocals, and you just can't get it out of your hand, a certified last-song-syndrome material.

For more information on the characters and the actors, check this excellent site.

[ANIME/MANGA] Solomon Blood+ Icons by undeadmiko, plus quick anime & manga reviews

Awesome icons by undeadmiko for papermoon_icons. Go to her page and give her some love. :3

Despite my very busy schedule I manage to sneak some fandom into my life. Here are the current list of manga and anime I'm following right now, with a quick comment each. Expect more in-depth reviews in the future. :)
  1. NANA - first read this in Shoujo Beat but surprise surprise, my 15 year old sis already has the complete manga. Haven't able to read the whole thing yet but what I've seen so far is pretty good. Slice of life. The OST of the live movie is fantastic (Glamorous Sky). The two movie leads fit their parts perfectly, as if they came to life off the pages of the manga/TV screen.
  2. Honey and Clover - What's with me and slice of life series? Just watched up to episode 3 of the anime. So far Morita looked promising. I peeked at the live movie version trailers and they seem to have some serious lovin' going on.
  3. Backstage Prince - Finished volume 1 and 2 of the manga. So far, so good. Light-hearted story about romance with a celebrity. I'm a sucker for shoujo. LOL!
  4. Tsubasa Chronicles - Seen part of episode 1 yet. The opening looked like Utada Hikaru's Final Distance video, lol! Looking forward to viewing the whole thing. It's actually sitting on my DVD player right now.
  5. Absolute Boyfriend - Hahahaha! Shoujo at its finest. Got humor, bishounen, not-so-serious story, and most importantly, NAKED MEN. Fun to read when you're not really expecting anything serious out of it. For older teens. "Tamahome" (as Night Tenjou) never looked so good. ^_~
  6. Hellsing - Alucard is a very interesting character. So far I'm up to episode 5 I think. Looking forward to reading more.
GOT. TO. SLEEP. My body is screaming for rest.... @_@

[ANIME] Solomon's younger twin?! (video & screencaps: Tsubasa Chronicles w/ Blood+)

Woah... I just started watching Tsubasa Chronicles and Solomon's ghost came to haunt me. Fai/Fye/Fay looks eerily like my favorite chavelier, only younger. Twins? Or rather, triplets (with Ouran's Tamaki)? Oooh three times the fun. ^_^

Someone ought to write a fanfic crossover with those three in it... lemme see...

Blood+/Tsubasa/Ouran = ???WTF

Errr much too weird. But hey, I'd give a free cherry and props to whoever is brave enough to try. ^^;;;

More Fai/Fye/Fay (too many variations -_-; ) screencaps from your friendly neighborhood Omni!

[MUSIC] Utada Hikaru - First Love acoustic (video)

I counted at least three guitars, six violins, two percussion sets and one piano. The arrangement on this performance is amazing. The guitars and piano complement each other so perfectly, it raised goosebumps on my arms. And yes, Hikki is singing. 'Nuff said.

No matter how much the years pass, this song will never grow old.

[MUSIC] Fall Out Boy Live in Manila POSTER!

I was shopping in SM Sta Rosa the other day and was pleasantly surprised to see a huge poster of the FOB concert plastered across the glass walls of the No Curfew store there. It was awesome. I have yet to watch the MTV ad though. ^_^

Woot! It's official! Australia's Gyroscope and Jack's Mannequin (yay!) will be the front acts, while rumor has it that Chicosci will be performing at least five songs.

The poster is from No Curfew's website.

Too bad I won't be able to watch since it's at the same sched as my all-important make-or-break major subject NCM 101 (7PM-9PM Thurs & Fri). *goes into a corner and cries* But who knows, a miracle may happen and I may be given a chance to attend. Darn. Where's a genie when you need one?

[ANIME] Hagi is SEXY! Blood+ Hagi screencaps

Yes, Hagi is SMEXY! He's my second favorite character in Blood+, but I'm well aware that the majority of the fandom is rooting for Hagi more than they are rooting for Solomon. Hagi did stay by Saya' side for more than a hundred years and has never been anything but faithful, loyal, and constant. Nothing in Blood+ is as constant as Hagi's love.

My only gripe is he could use a little more emotion in the show. Watching him deliver single-word dialogues like "Saya" and the phrase "As you wish" can get a little bit monotonous at times. No offense please Hagi fangirls! I love Hagi too ya know. ^_^

I guess his silences can all be traced back to Vietnam, and what happened there. Poor Hagi. He was much more of a person pre-Vietnam, much more demonstrative and certainly articulate. I miss seeing him smile...

Thank you whiteplums! I love you x100 for uploading this! :3
